The discussion focused on the Syrian settlement. The President of Russia informed the German Chancellor of the agreements between Russia and Turkey to promote stabilisation in the Idlib de-escalation zone, reached at the September 17, 2018 talks with President of the Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Sochi.
The two leaders also reaffirmed their mutual commitment to further facilitating the settlement of the internal conflict in Ukraine, including as part of the Normandy Format. Vladimir Putin expressed his concern over the developments following the killing of DPR’s head Alexander Zakharchenko, stressing the need to fully implement the 2015 Minsk Package of Measures, including a legislative recognition by Kiev of the region’s special status.
In addition, Vladimir Putin and Angela Merkel discussed a number of matters related to overcoming negative trends on the global financial markets.
It was agreed to continue bilateral contacts at various levels.
