Condolences to family and friends of Boris Paton, member of the Russian Academy of Sciences

Vladimir Putin conveyed his condolences to the family and friends of Boris Paton, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, over his passing.

The message reads, in part:

“Boris Paton was a world-famous scientists and an outstanding person. He dedicated his entire life to the job he chose and made a truly unique contribution to the development of engineering and technical thought as well as to the promotion of international scientific and cultural cooperation.

The memory of Boris Paton, a wonderful person and true enthusiast, will live on in Russia and in the hearts of his friends, colleagues and numerous students.”

Boris Paton, a Soviet and Ukrainian scientist of metallurgy and metal technology, who made many discoveries in electric welding, passed away on August 19 at the age of 101. He headed the first underwater and space welding operations. Boris Paton was a two-time Hero of Socialist Labour, winner of the Stalin (1950) and Lenin (1957) prizes and member of many foreign academies. He became president of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (previously the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences) in 1962 and remained in office until his death.
