The law closes loopholes and sorts out vague areas and contradictions in legal regulation of relations in the environmental protection area, and also in the use of mineral and aquatic biological resources in the Russian Federation’s internal sea waters, the territorial sea, continental shelf and exclusive economic zone.
A number of the federal law’s provisions aim to implement the provisions of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea adopted on December 10, 1982.
The amendments concern procedures for drilling work, the creation, operation and use of artificial islands, objects and installations, and the laying of underwater cables and pipelines.
The law also sets out the specific conditions for fishing and carrying out marine resource studies on Russia’s continental shelf and exclusive economic zone.
