In his speech, President Medvedev noted that on the whole the various FSB units accomplished their respective tasks in 2009.
Mr Medvedev identified the Service's main priorities, stating that the fight against terrorism and extremism, economic security and counterintelligence activities are top-priority objectives.
Another priority is the effective protection of Russian borders and making sure they have up-to-date facilities. Along with this Dmitry Medvedev drew attention to new challenges arising in connection with the creation of the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, as well as the need for helping South Ossetia and Abkhazia strengthen their borders in accordance with international requirements.
The President also spoke about the FSB's logistics capacity, equipping it with modern weaponry and technology, and the social protection of its employees.
In connection with the upcoming 65th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, Mr Medvedev stressed the need to continue with the publication of archival materials and to preserve the historical truth about the events of those years.
The meeting was also attended by Chief of Staff of Presidential Executive Office Sergei Naryshkin, President of the Supreme Court Vyacheslav Lebedev, Prosecutor General Yury Chaika, Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev, Deputy Prime Ministers Sergei Ivanov and Igor Sechin, Deputy Prime Minister and Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the North Caucasus Federal District Alexander Khloponin, heads of power ministries and departments, and presidential aides.
