Mr Nazarbayev congratulated Dmitry Medvedev on a historic event: signing the new START Treaty with the United States. In turn, the President of Russia praised Kazakhstan for contributing jointly with Belarus and Ukraine to implementation of the previous START Treaty and to strategic stability in general.
The two leaders also discussed the crisis situation in Kyrgyzstan and expressed deep concerns over the dramatic political confrontation in the country which has already resulted in multiple casualties and a substantial destabilisation of governance and social affairs.
The Presidents of the two largest states in the region currently chairing the OSCE (Kazakhstan), CIS, and CSTO (Russia) emphasised the urgent need to end the bloodshed and any violence and called for stabilisation throughout all of Kyrgyzstan.
President Medvedev confirmed the information earlier officially conveyed to CSTO member states and other partners of Russia, on Russian military being sent to Kyrgyzstan to protect the families of Russian citizens, the diplomatic and other missions of Russia there.
