Lieutenant Colonel Sergei Chebnev had completed his military service by the time the special military operation began but he volunteered to the front. He commanded a battalion of the 9th motor rifle regiment, carried out combat missions in the DPR, LPR and the Kharkov Region and was awarded the Order of Courage, the Medal For Bravery and the Suvorov Medal.
Sergei Chebnev was awarded the title of Hero of Russia for battles in the Kursk Region in August 2024. Commanding three regiments of various subordination, he defended the settlement of Malaya Loknya for 12 days in order to hold an important bridgehead near the city of Sudzha which had been invaded by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
On August 18, in order to prevent the enemy landing force from gaining a foothold in the rear of the units, Sergei Chebnev personally led the counterattack of the assault group. During the battle, the group came under attack from mortars and a kamikaze drone, and the lieutenant colonel was fatally wounded.
The courage of the soldiers and Sergei Chebnev’s competent actions delayed the advance of the Ukrainian Armed Forces towards the Kursk NPP, allowing the Russian Armed Forces to send reserves for help.
The Hero’s wife Olga is raising three children and is a member of the Council for supporting special military operation participants and their families under the Kaliningrad Region Governor.
