To foster patriotic education among young people and preserve the memory of the heroic feats of Soviet soldiers, the Federal Law establishes a new commemorative date in Russia: April 9 – Day of the Heroic Assault and Capture of Königsberg (1945).
The capture of Königsberg, a strategically important fortress and the capital of East Prussia, one of the most important strongholds of the Wehrmacht’s defences in the east, became one of the most notable events in the final stage of the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945 and played a substantial role in the final defeat of Nazi Germany.
