Adviser to the President and Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Change Ruslan Edelgeriyev held a meeting via videoconference with representatives of the European Roundtable on Climate Change and Sustainable Transition (ERCST) Andrei Marcu and Michael Mehling. ERCST is one of the main EU research institutions on climate issues.
At the meeting, Mr Edelgeriyev outlined the main areas of Russia’s climate policy and its approach to the pressing issues on the international climate agenda. He focused on the EU-proposed carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM), noting that unilateral restrictions, as a means if countering climate change are unacceptable.
Mr Edelgeriyev said Russia is planning to establish a voluntary system of trade in carbon units to reduce the carbon footprint of companies. The State Duma of the Russian Federal Assembly is reviewing a relevant draft law. The foreign scientists showed an interest in the experimental regulation of greenhouse emissions in Sakhalin Region.
The participants reviewed the need for developing mechanisms of cooperation on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. They expect to complete this discussion at the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 26) to the UNFCCC in Glasgow.
Adviser to the President and the ERCST representatives agreed to continue the dialogue and exchange of views at the working level.
