Under the UAE presidency, representatives of over 100 countries made final preparations for COP28. The agenda was devoted to discussing the actions that the international community must take to achieve a full-scale decarbonisation of the economy by 2030, a comprehensive overview of the Paris Accords’ implementation, modalities for preventing losses and damage, as well as adapting to the adverse effects of climate change.
In his remarks, Ruslan Edelgeriyev noted that the Russian Federation seeks to be an active and constructive participant in the upcoming COP28, where the focus must be on those areas where major results can be achieved in the near future. When identifying new and additional sources of funding, it is necessary to take into account the principle of common but differentiated responsibility and corresponding capabilities, given different national conditions, as well as the following principles of Articles 9.1 and 9.2 of the Paris Accords: mandatory funding from developed countries and voluntary funding from other countries if possible.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Mr Edelgeriyev held working meetings with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Climate Action Selwin Hart, UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell, COP28 President-designate Dr Sultan Al Jaber, as well as Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan Mukhtar Babayev. The parties discussed current work on a wide range of issues and also outlined forms of further cooperation.
