Working visit by Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office Sergei Naryshkin to Japan

Sergei Naryshkin made a working visit to Tokyo on December 9–10, 2010 and met with Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku, former Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori, member of Parliament and former Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, public figures and business leaders.

“We discussed a broad range of issues concerning our bilateral relations and our trade, economic and humanitarian cooperation. We coordinated our positions on key international policy issues. I am most satisfied with the results of the talks that took place, think we have a high level of development in our relations and see good potential for taking this development further,” Mr Naryshkin stressed.

Sergei Naryshkin also took part in the closing ceremony of the 2010 Festival of Russian Culture in Japan.

“The festival was a big success and had a programme rich in memorable events. More than 600 performers and artists from Russia took part, with performances taking place in 40 Japanese prefectures, and drawing audiences of over a million,” Mr Naryshkin said.

Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office presented the Russian Order of Friendship to Japanese Noh theatre actor Otoshige Sakai for his contribution to developing cultural ties between the two countries, noting that Mr Sakai has devoted his entire life to Noh theatre – one of Japanese culture’s most outstanding art forms. Mr Sakai, who has the status of ‘living national treasure’ in Japan, has been on tour to Russia on many occasions.

The agreement on organising the Russian Culture Festivals in Japan was signed in the summer of 2006 for a five-year period with possibility of extension.
