Mr Medvedev agreed with Mr Ban’s view on the need for a UN Security Council resolution on the situation in South Ossetia and said that the Security Council’s main task at the present stage is to support the peace plan based on the six settlement principles of August 12, in the version in which it was drafted jointly by the Presidents of Russia and France.
The President thanked Mr Ban for his information that the UN specialised agencies are ready to provide humanitarian aid to the people of South Ossetia, where the Georgian leadership’s criminal actions have created a humanitarian disaster.
Mr Medvedev noted that Russia would provide all necessary assistance to representatives from these institutions wishing to go to South Ossetia to see for themselves the scale of the disaster.
The conversation took place at the UN Secretary General’s initiative.
