In 2011 Italy marks the 150th anniversary of the nation’s unification. One of the year’s most significant events is slated for June 2, the Republic Day, to mark the anniversary of the nationwide referendum on Italy’s state system, which was held on this day 65 years ago.
Delegations from 80 countries have gathered in Rome for the celebrations, 40 of which are led by heads of state and government.
The Russian President received an invitation in February, during his visit to Italy for the launch of the Year of Italy in Russia and the Year of Russia in Italy.
The celebrations opened with a military parade of more than 5,000 troops representing all branches of the Italian armed forces. The parade was also attended by servicemen from the countries that have participated in international missions together with Italy, including Russia’s Guard of Honour, which carried the Russian national flag.
Dmitry Medvedev planned a number of meetings for his visit to attend the celebrations. Yesterday the Russian President met with President of Italy Giorgio Napolitano.
