The head of state’s message reads, in part:
”All performances by Alexei Alexeyevich — multiple World Champion and Olympic Champion — were vivid and unforgettable for all of skiing’s many fans. His successes have always served as an example for both fellow teammates and novice skiers to follow.
The bright memory of this strong and courageous man will live on forever in the hearts of all those who knew and loved him. His victories and records are forever inscribed in the annals of Russian sport.“
Former Olympic Champion skier Alexei Prokurorov was killed in a car accident in Vladimir on 10 October 2008. He was 45 years old.
Alexei Prokurorov participated in the Olympic Games in 1988 (where he won a gold medal in the 30km freelance skiing event and a silver in the relay race 4 x 10km), 1992, 1994, 1998 and 2002. He was World Champion in 1997 and 2001 in the 30km event. Since 2006 he was the senior coach of the Russian women's national skiing team.
