In particular, residents of Nizhny Tagil drew the President’s attention to infrastructure problems in public transportation and public lighting, and the lack of sports grounds. Dilapidated housing was another problem raised by citizens of the region.

Vladimir Putin suggested developing a plan that sets out the priorities for Nizhny Tagil’s development with federal government support. According to the President, the city can be a good example for other Russian cities and towns that need support from authorities at all levels.

President of Russia Vladimir Putin: Good afternoon, friends.

We have gathered repeatedly in Nizhny Tagil to try and resolve the problems facing large companies, including Uralvagonzavod. The crisis of 2008 was especially difficult since there were no orders and there emerged other problems too, first and foremost a great deal of financial problems.

At the time we were able to basically resolve a crisis situation. Today city’s main enterprises are in satisfactory condition and unemployment is minimal. Yet even then together with Mr Kholmanskikh and the Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy, today’s regional Governor [Yevgeny Kuyvashev], we paid special attention to the state of the Urals’ industrial centres, including Nizhny Tagil, and I asked Mr Kholmanskikh to think about what we could do to develop the infrastructure and urban environment in the city.

I know that this topic has been reviewed in great detail at the level of the local authorities, at various ministries and agencies, including the Finance Ministry of the Russian Federation, and by the Governor.

We now met to understand how work has progressed and what you are suggesting as first steps.
