Among the issues on the agenda were expansion of trade and economic and humanitarian cooperation and work together in the oil and gas sector.
Mr Medvedev noted that cooperation between Russia and Vietnam has reached a new level. There are good ideas for joint projects in machine-building, telecommunications, science, and cooperation on disaster relief and rapid response to emergency situations. Russia and Vietnam will step up joint prospecting for fossil fuels in their own countries and in third countries, Mr Medvedev said. There are also plans to build new energy facilities and modernise existing facilities in Vietnam.
Cooperation in international relations, in particular in the different forums in the Asia-Pacific region, was discussed. Mr Medvedev said that Russia will work with Vietnam in the UN Security Council towards making the world more multi-polar and safer.
The meeting saw the signature of a number of intergovernmental agreements: in the fuel and energy sector, protection of intellectual property, a joint action plan for trade and investment through to 2012, and an agreement on cooperation in combating illegal immigration.
Nguyen Minh Triet awarded state decorations to representatives of major Russian oil and gas companies Gazprom, Zarubezhneft, Transneft, and Zarubezhneftegaz, and Mr Medvedev issued a decree awarding state decorations to a number of Vietnamese state figures for their great contribution to developing scientific and technical cooperation.
