Tatarstan celebrates its Republic Day towards the end of summer every year in honour of the Declaration of State Sovereignty, which its Supreme Soviet adopted on August 30, 1990. The former Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was renamed the Republic of Tatarstan, and acquired sovereignty within the Russian Federation. The republic adopted a constitution in 1992, and brought it into compliance with the federal fundamental law. Tatarstan has two official languages, Russian and Tatar.
