Mr Putin and Mr Alferov discussed the development of science and education.

Mr Alfereov said modern economics will develop only with the support of science-intensive technologies, primarily bio-technologies, information technologies, and environmentally-friendly power engineering. Russian science had a huge potential in these spheres and remained the leader in some.

Mr Putin and Mr Alferov touched upon the issue of state investments in the development of science-intensive technologies and the problems of science-education interaction.

Mr Alferov told the President about the preliminary results of the Global Energy Awards, a new international scientific contest, and preparations for a meeting of the international committee which would determine the prize’s first winner.

An award ceremony will take place during the festivities marking the 300th anniversary of St Petersburg scheduled for June this year.
