Following Talks with President Megawati Sukarnoputri of Indonesia Vladimir Putin declared that Russia and Indonesia advocate the formation of an equitable and democratic system of international relations. A system based on the generally recognized principles and rules of international law and on political and diplomatic methods of solving international problems. He also stated that their countries stand for improvements in the UN system and increasing the efficiency of that organisation's various mechanisms

The Russian head of state and the leader of one of the largest Muslim countries signed a Declaration on the Foundations of Friendly and Partner Relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Indonesia in the 21st Century, a political document which is called upon to determine Russian-Indonesian relations in the long-term.

Relations between Russia and Indonesia are generally on the rise and are dynamically evolving. Russia and Indonesia have great potential for the intensification of cooperation in the political, trade, economic, technological and military-technical fields. The recently improved political and economic situation in Indonesia acts as the foundation for this development.

In addition to the main political declaration, a whole package of bilateral documents designed to expand cooperation between the two countries in a number of areas was signed in the presence of the heads of state.
