President Vladimir Putin held a meeting to discuss the current situation in Chechnya, the state of the republic’s economy and its political situation. The meeting was attended by Akhmed Kadyrov, the head of the Chechen Administration, A. Popov, the republic’s prime minister, and Stanislav Ilyasov, the minister responsible for Chechnya.
Putin drew attention above all to the continuing threat of terrorism. He said that this situation raised many questions, especially concerning the gradual handover of increasing powers for maintaining law and order to the republic’s own law enforcement agencies.
Putin said that successfully resolving political and socio-economic issues in the republic would lay the most solid foundation for a return to peace. The meeting accordingly focused in particular on questions such as getting the local economy back on its feet and establishing procedures for cooperation between the federal and Chechen political authorities.
