Among the topics discussed were stepping up economic and scientific activities, the development of the key industries in the district, improvement of the environmental and social situation and the development of the border with Kazakhstan and Mongolia.
During the meeting the head of state singled out the more acute problems in the region.
They include an unfavourable economic situation. Many industrial enterprises are inefficient, most Siberian regions are still reliant on subsidies, and the economy is predominantly geared to the extractive industries.
The environmental situation is grave. Vladimir Putin cited data that show that Siberian enterprises account for more than a third of toxic emissions. An important aspect of national security is the development of the state border, the President said. That work should make the fight against illegal migration and cross-border crime more effective and at the same time contribute to normal cooperation between the border regions.
The meeting devoted particular attention to the military and technical security of strategic facilities and to the crime situation in the Siberian Federal District.
