Mr Putin and Mr Veshnyakov discussed the Central Election Commission’s work in connection with the forthcoming elections to the State Duma, and gubernatorial elections in a number of the Russian Federation’s constituent entities.
Mr Veshnyakov said some regions had decided to hold the elections simultaneously. On December 7, 2003, ten Russian regions will elect not only deputies to the State Duma, but also heads of regional administrations.
He also told the President about the preparations for presidential elections in the Chechen Republic scheduled for October 5, 2003.
The Chairman of the Central Election Commission told the President about the completion of a comprehensive overhaul of the election legislature. He said the modernisation of the automatic state election system would be finished by September 1.
Mr Veshnyakov said that as the political parties planned to sign an agreement on holding election campaigns without violations, a supervisory council had to be established to control the implementation of the agreement.
