Mr Putin said he was satisfied with the way the Russian-Japanese dialogue in the key areas was developing. In spite of complications, consultations on the peace treaty have continued, the President stressed.
The two leaders discussed trade and economic cooperation, in particular in the fuel and energy sphere.
The North Korean nuclear problem was discussed in detail. Mr Putin stressed the need to continue work in the six-party format to resolve the situation around the DPRK.
The two leaders also discussed the idea of creating an expert council, which would propose new projects for Russian-Japanese cooperation.
Junichiro Koizumi invited the Russian President to visit Japan.
