Russia’s relations with the Pacific Rim countries are not developing as rapidly as, for example, with Western Europe, President Putin told journalists, but the opportunities to become engaged with the countries in the region should not be missed. In connection with this, the meeting of the APEC heads of state and government was useful, the President stressed.
The summit discussed in a broad format the problems of the region, including the new trade restrictions. The need to step up international trade security in connection with the terrorist threat is obvious. At the same time, Mr Putin drew the attention of his colleagues to the need to approach the issue by methods and means that would not add to the load on the world economy and would not slow down its growth.
The President expressed hope that the bilateral meetings and discussions held during the forum would give an impetus to Russia’s relations with many Asia-Pacific countries, in particular, Indonesia, Peru and New Zealand.
Vladimir Putin answered a number of questions connected with Russia’s accession to the WTO, cooperation with the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, the situation in Iran and North Korea.
