At the beginning of the meeting, Mr Putin congratulated Mr Saakashvili on his election.
Mr Putin and Mr Saakashvili examined prospects for trade and economic relations between their countries, the situation surrounding supplies of Russian energy supplies to Georgia, and the restructuring of Georgia’s debt to Russia.
They also discussed at length the fight against terrorism and the situation on the Russian-Georgian border. The law enforcement agencies of Russia and Georgia were instructed to prepare plans for joint work both on the border and between security and interior bodies.
Mr Putin and Mr Saakashvili agreed to resume the “Sochi process” involving trilateral cooperation between Russia, Georgia and Abkhazia in power supplies, restoration of railway communication, and repatriation of refugees.
They instructed their cabinets of ministers to immediately resume the work of the Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation.
