President Vladimir Putin attended a military parade to mark the 59th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War (1941–1945)

The parade was opened by a company of drummers from the Moscow Military Music School. It was followed by detachments carrying the State Flag of Russia, the Victory Banner, the Banner of the Russian Armed Forces, followed by the famous company and Guard of Honour representing the three armed services of Russia. The banners of the units that took part in the war were also carried out.

Then followed the columns of the Combined Arms Academy, the Peter the Great Strategic Missile Forces Military Academy, the Military University of the Defence Ministry, the Military-Engineering University, the Military Radiation, Chemical and Biological Defence University, the Gagarin Air Force Academy, the Zhukovsky Military Aviation Technical University, the Moscow Space Forces Military Radioelectronics Institute and the Civil Defense Academy of the Ministry for Emergencies.

The Airborne Forces Paratroopers Regiment, the cadets of the Moscow Military Institute of the Russian Border Service, the Marines Regiment, the Regiment of the Interior Troops, the cadets of the Moscow Suvorov Military School, the Moscow Military Institute and the Combined Military Band of the Moscow Garrison also marched through Red Square.

Taking part in the parade were veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Chechnya and the peacekeeping missions in the Northern Caucasus and the Balkans.

After the parade, President Putin met with veterans of World War II.
