Welcome ceremony before the beginning of Russian-German consultations. With German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.
Welcome ceremony before the beginning of Russian-German consultations. With German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.

Following the end of bilateral consultations in Schleswig-Holstein, President Vladimir Putin noted that the multifaceted development of relations between Russia and Germany might look as though it has been achieved with ease, but this appearance of ease conceals the efforts of many people all set on obtaining positive results.

Mr Putin announced, in particular, that Russia is ready to begin repayment of its Paris Club debts to Germany ahead of schedule, with both countries standing to benefit. The President also expressed support for Germany’s bid to become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. Russia can decide this question only together with the other UN members, above all, the other permanent members of the Security Council, as part of the ongoing process to reform the United Nations.

Also on the agenda at the consultations was a discussion on the upcoming events to celebrate the 60th anniversary of victory in World War II. Russia would like to underscore the significance of these celebrations as an event that can unite all the peoples of Europe in remembering the past and looking together toward the future, Mr Putin said.
