President Vladimir Putin congratulated 1941–1945 Great Patriotic War veterans living abroad on sixtieth anniversary of victory

May 3, 2005
22:00

The address reads:

“Dear veterans!

Please accept my warmest congratulations on the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of victory in the 1941–1945 Great Patriotic War.

I know that this holiday is sacred for you, wherever you may be today and in whichever corner of the world you will be celebrating. I know that you will never forget the events of those years, your comrades-in-arms and, of course, the victorious month of May 1945.

It is with immense gratitude that we recall the courage, tenacity and self-sacrifice of your generation, your military feats and your great labour. You traversed harsh trials, defended people’s right to freedom and saved our country and the world from Nazism. We pay tribute to everyone who gave ourselves and our descendents a future. The lessons of the Great Patriotic War teach us to be united and to stand side by side in the fight against modern threats. Only together, only by uniting the efforts of the entire international community, can we effectively combat terrorism, discrimination, ethnic and religious intolerance and any attempts to rehabilitate ideas of hatred towards our fellow men. This is our duty to you, the heroes and victors.

Happy holiday, dear veterans.

I wish you peace, health and long life.”
