Mr Lebedev informed the President about the work of juries and justices of the peace and also about the situation with the fight against drug dealing and trafficking.
The Supreme Court plans to adopt a special resolution generalising the practice of cases being examined with the participation of juries.
Juries are a comparatively new institution in the Russian judicial system and quite a few mistakes are being made in their work, mostly due to incorrect understanding of the procedures set out in the Criminal-Procedural Code. The Supreme Court has organised special courses and further training for judges at the Justice Academy in order to eliminate these shortcomings.
Replying to the President’s question regarding the situation with setting up a special body to fight drug dealing and trafficking, Mr Lebedev said that work has intensified on identifying people involved in these activities.
