The President of Russia warmly congratulated the President of the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the people of China on the widely celebrated 60 th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War. After accepting the congratulations with thanks, Hu Jintao emphasised the Soviet army's decisive contribution to the victory in the war against militaristic Japan, and said that it will never be forgotten by the Chinese people. For this reason, the President of the PRC asked that his sincere gratitude be extended to the people of Russia.
Vladimir Putin and Hu Jintao expressed their satisfaction with the success of the first, joint Russian-Chinese military exercises, exercises which both see as proving the strength of their countries' strategic partnership. As the exercises undoubtedly confirmed the ability of the Chinese and Russian armed forces to combat new threats to the international community together, their positive international implications were emphasised.
During the conversation, Vladimir Putin and Hu Jintao also exchanged opinions on other questions on the bilateral and international agendas, and discussed their plans to contact each other in the near future.
