The fight against international terrorism was one of the main subjects addressed at the 2005 Summit, attended by many world leaders.
Any attempts to show indulgence towards terrorism, to flirt with terrorists or to use them in the pursuit of political aims and objectives of any kind should be universally condemned, said President Vladimir Putin at the Security Council session. The United Nations and the Security Council could become the ‘headquarters’ in the combat against international terrorism and Russia is ready to contribute actively to strengthening the United Nations’ central role in this combat.
The International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism, signed today by 63 countries at the UN headquarters, will become an effective instrument in preventing the danger of weapons of mass destruction being used by terrorists. Russia was the initiator of this document and is grateful for the support other countries have given it, Mr Putin said.
