Before the beginning of a working meeting with Minister for Civil Defence, Emergencies and Disaster Relief Sergei Shoigu.

Mr Shoigu reported to the President on the completion of work by Russian rescue workers and doctors in Pakistan in the region struck by the earthquake at the beginning of October, and also spoke about plans to provide additional assistance to the earthquake victims.

The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry, together with its Swiss colleagues, is preparing to send a heavy Mi-26 helicopter to the disaster zone with a new delivery of humanitarian aid.

Mr Shoigu noted that United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan had appealed to the Russian President to send additional aid to Pakistan.

Mr Shoigu said that the aid in question consists of tents and warm clothing, noting that the earthquake had left more than three million people homeless in Pakistan.

Mr Putin informed Mr Shoigu that the Pakistani Prime Minister, who was in Moscow attending the meeting of heads of government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation member countries, noted the high level of competence and the professionalism of the Russian rescue workers.
