The meeting discussed state border protection issues.
Mr Putin, just returned from Magadan Region where he discussed border issues, noted that the country needs its borders to be modern.
The state border’s purpose is to protect the country and its national interests from all modern threats – from terrorism to drugs and arms trafficking, and in the Magadan Region specifically, from poaching. But, as Mr Putin stressed, the border should also be a line of cooperation with partners and not just a line of separation from other states and peoples. In this sense, the President’s meeting with border guards in Magadan on November 22, fitted into the context of Russia’s work on developing relations in the Asian region in general.
Mr Putin assessed the situation with the state border as satisfactory but also noted the need to take rapid steps towards modernisation.
