The President of Russia warmly congratulated Ilham Aliyev on his birthday and wished him further successes in his post as head of Azerbaijan, a close friend. The presidents also exchanged best wishes for the coming New Year.
During the conversation both parties expressed their satisfaction with the results of the Year of Azerbaijan in Russia which will end on 26 December 2005. In connection with this they discussed separate issues connected with the ceremonial opening of the Year of Russia in Azerbaijan which will take place in 2006 in Baku.
Vladimir Putin also sent Ilkham Aliyev a message of congratulations which reads, in particular:
“The people of Russia and Azerbaijan are well aware of your contribution to strengthening the traditional friendship and cooperation between our countries. I am confident that the Russian-Azerbaijan strategic partnership will remain an important factor in security and stability in the region.
Azerbaijan's significant economic and social achievements along with the dynamic democratic changes have provided you with national support and trust. In particular, the results of recent parliamentary elections bear witness to this.”
