Mr Medvedev, Mr Voronin and Mr Smirnov signed a joint declaration, noting the stabilising role played by the peacekeeping operation in Transdniester.
The parties agreed to continue efforts to settle the Transdniester conflict, and renew work in the 5+2 group (Moldova, Transdniester, Russia, Ukraine, the OSCE, and observers from the European Union and the United States).
The declaration also stated the expediency of transforming the peacekeeping mission currently underway in the region into a new peacekeeping operation under the aegis of the OSCE after settlement of the Transdniester conflict.
Peacekeepers have been stationed in the region since the Transdniester armed conflict in 1992. The peacekeeping forces comprise military contingents from Russia, Moldova, and Transdniester, and a group of military observers from Ukraine.
