The Russian-Ukrainian summit was the first item on the agenda. The heads of state discussed measures to expand bilateral cooperation.

After the talks, the Russian-Ukrainian interstate commission, co-chaired by Vladimir Putin and Viktor Yushchenko, held its first session to review topical issues pertaining to military and military-technical cooperation, trade and economic contacts, including those in the energy sphere, regional and border ties, as well as the sore spots of the Black Sea Navy, and Azov-Kerch settlement.

Following the session a ceremony of signing Russian-Ukrainian documents on cooperation in the various spheres took place. The Joint Intergovernmental Agreement on Readmission was also adopted.

The two Presidents held a joint news conference on the results of the talks. Mr Putin reported that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to complete a joint plan of action for 2007–2008.

The Russian President highly valued the results achieved at the commission’s first session, but observed that the potential for Russian-Ukrainian cooperation had not yet been fully used.

The commission will hold its second session in May-June 2007. It is planning to draft an action plan, and a roadmap of major undertakings for tackling the biggest challenges in bilateral relations, including border issues, and to prepare the text of bilateral strategic partnership declaration.
