Mr Medvedev expressed his sincere condolences for the aftermath of the tragic earthquake that struck Italy, causing much loss of life and severe material damage.
The President reiterated Russia’s readiness to have its Emergency Situations Ministry assist in the disaster relief effort. Mr Berlusconi thanked Mr Medvedev for this expression of solidarity, but said that the Italian government is not turning to foreign aid at present. The two leaders did agree, however, to discuss again in the future possible assistance from Russia.
They also agreed that Mr Berlusconi’s visit to Russia, postponed because of the earthquake, will go ahead at a suitable time when circumstances permit.
The conversation took place at Russia’s initiative.
