The delegations from the two countries had a joint photo session before beginning their talks.
Mr Putin and Mr Prodi issued a joint communiqué summing up the results reached by the intergovernmental consultations.
A package of bilateral agreements was signed in the presence of the two leaders. The documents signed include agreements at state level and agreements between Russian companies and financial institutions and their Italian partners. Among the agreements are an intergovernmental agreement on mutual protection of intellectual property in the area of military-technical cooperation, a programme of cultural and education exchanges for 2007–2009, and a protocol on cooperation on a project to build a medium-haul aircraft. The bilateral talks resulted in a total of ten agreements being signed.
Mr Putin and Mr Prodi also issued press statements and held a press conference.
Earlier in the day, an official ceremony to welcome Mr Putin took place in the square in front of the city’s prefecture building. Mr Putin and Mr Prodi inspected the honour guard and an orchestra played the Russian and Italian national anthems. Mr Putin and Mr Prodi first had a discussion one-on-one and were then joined by their delegations. Before the talks began, Mr Putin signed the guests’ book at the Bari Prefecture.
