Acting President Vladimir Putin presented the Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against the Safety of Maritime Navigation and the Protocol for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against the Safety of Fixed Platforms Located on the Continental Shelf of 10 March 1988, signed on behalf of the USSR in London on 2 March 1989 and subject to its subsequent ratification, to the State Duma for ratification

The explanatory memorandum to the documents states, in particular, that both agreements create an international legal basis for cooperation in preventing and suppressing terrorists acts at sea and ensuring inevitable punishment for the criminals who commit such crimes.

Russia’s participation in the Convention and the Protocol will enhance the efficiency of its cooperation with other countries in the fight against international terrorism and will contribute to strengthening security guarantees for Russian ships and man-made structures located on the Russian Federation’s continental shelf.

The Convention and the Protocol were adopted 10 March 1988 at a diplomatic conference in Rome. At present more than 40 countries, including the leading maritime nations, are parties to the Convention while the Protocol comprises more than 30 nations.
