The message reads, in particular:
“The creation of the European Communities on 25 March 1957 has had a significant influence on the development of today’s Europe. And this event has, therefore, unquestionable historical importance for the whole continent.
In 1957, half a century ago, the Treaty of Rome was a largely innovative document. The countries that signed it showed proof of their political will to overcome traditional stereotypes and differences, and to develop a common strategy based on cooperation and integration.
By building on the fundamental principles contained in this document, EU states have been able to achieve tangible results with respect to ensuring the rights and freedoms of their citizens as well as economic and social progress. It is also significant that the European Union is becoming a more authoritative and influential figure in world politics and makes an important contribution towards resolving issues linked with regional and global security.
Today the EU stands on the threshold of important decisions that will shape the future of the integration organisation. We expect that these decisions will help strengthen unity on our shared continent in the interests of extensive cooperation within Europe.
I shall emphasise that Russia has chosen to develop multifaceted ties with the EU as a question of principle. Thanks to joint efforts we have been able to construct a solid basis for our strategic partnership and to launch promising projects in the economic, educational and cultural spheres. However, in order to fully benefit from the tremendous creative potential of Russia and the EU, we need to make new steps towards one another. These steps must be based on a constructive dialogue, mutual respect and acknowledgment of different paths of development.
I expect that fruitful cooperation between Russia and the EU will continue for the benefit of our peoples and in the interests of stability and security in Europe and the world.”
