Acting President Vladimir Putin sent a message to North Korean leader Kim Jong-il

February 9, 2000
00:00

The message said, in part, that the treaty on friendship, good neighbourly relations, and close ties between Russia and North Korea opens wide possibilities for strengthening the bilateral cooperation in all spheres and expanding the political dialogue between the two countries.

The treaty was signed during Igor Ivanov’s visit to North Korea.

The acting president’s message said, in part:

“The tensions around the Korean Peninsula are a matter of great concern. Russia rejects the use of force in dealing with complex international problems and stands for resolving them through negotiations. Russia supports the Korean people in their search for peaceful unification of their country. In line with the constructive concept of a multi-polar world, we are ready to cooperate with all interested countries to improve the military and political situation on the peninsula, leading to peace and security in Northeast Asia.”

Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov delivered the acting president’s message to Kim Jong-il during his visit to Pyongyang.
