This message said, in part:
“This operation is being performed in compliance with UN Security Council Resolution No 1088 of December 12, 1996.
“On June 21, 2000, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution No 1305 extending the SFOR’s mandate in Bosnia and Herzegovina for another 12 months.
“The strength of the Russian contingent taking part in the peacekeeping operation will be 1,200 people. Their task is to assist in the implementation of the said agreement in accordance with the mandate of the multi-national Stabilisation Force, approved by UN Security Council resolutions Nos 1088 and 1305.
“Financing for the Russian military contingent’s involvement in the peacekeeping operation shall be provided in accordance with Russian law.
“Given Russia’s great responsibility as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, as well as its role in and concern for reaching a settlement in the former Yugoslavia, I believe it is important that the Russian military contingent continue its peacekeeping mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina until July 31, 2001.”
