Mr Putin opened the meeting by saying that Russia highly appreciated the state of bilateral relations with Greece and the consent reached on a number of international issues, on which the two countries have identical views.

The Russian leader stressed the relations between the two countries have been making steady progress.

At a joint news conference on the outcome of the talks, Mr Putin said the parties had discussed a number of cooperation projects, including in the military-technical and energy spheres.

When speaking of the situation in the Balkans, the President of Russia emphasised the crisis could only be overcome by implementing the UN Security Council’s Resolution 1244 and Kosovo’s unconditional demilitarisation.

In the Moscow Kremlin Mr Stephanopoulos handed over to Mr Putin the gonfalon which once belonged to the Russian Navy, which jointly with British and French naval forces defeated Ibrahim Pasha’s flotilla.

The Greek President said the relics had been kept at the Greek Embassy’s chapel in Algeria.

Mr Putin thanked the Greek leader for the relics which are of great historical value to the Russian Navy.
