Russia has for centuries been a home for both Muslims and Christians, and will always remain one, said Mr Putin addressing participants in this meeting. He thanked the religious leaders of Russia’s Muslims for their resolute stand in support of the state, especially in the light of recent developments in the Chechen Republic.
On behalf of all participants in the meeting, Mr Putin wished all Muslims of Russia a happy Kurban Bairam holiday.
At the beginning of the meeting, Sheikh Ravil Gainutdin, Chairman of the Council of Muftis of Russia, presented Mr Putin with a gift of a dagger. According to Islamic tradition, such gifts are a symbol of high esteem.
