The President met with Defence Minister Igor Sergeyev, who informed him of the military-technical aspects of the operation to rescue the crew of the Kursk nuclear-powered submarine.
At a meeting held later with members of the Cabinet and heads of the Presidential Executive Office, Mr Putin put the tragedy in the Barents Sea at the top of the agenda.
