President Putin was informed that the hostage rescue operation in the southern resort town of Lazarevskoye, the Greater Sochi area, had been successful.
On September 21, at 9:50 a.m. Moscow time, a group of masked gunmen stormed into a private hotel and took hostage nine construction workers. Federal Security Service (FSB) and Russian Interior Ministry authorities together with paramilitary special units arrived at Lazarevskoye to handle the situation. On September 22, at approximately 11:15 a.m., the five hostage-takers surrendered without a single shot having been made.
