The message of congratulations reads, in particular:
“Our countries are traditionally linked by close relations based on the mutual affection and respect that the Russian and French people feel for one another. France was and remains one of Russia’s major partners in global policy and European affairs. Our economic and trade ties are increasing from year to year. Cooperation in the education and cultural spheres, such as promoting the French language in Russia and Russian in France, is developing faster.
Russian-French relations are notable for the very high degree of confidence and mutual understanding that characterises them. I hope that your election will further strengthen our relations.
Our priorities for the near future include maintaining close cooperation between Russia and France within the United Nations and the Security Council. I also expect that France will preserve its driving force with regards to developing and strengthening the strategic partnership between Russia and the European Union, especially in light of your country’s EU presidency in the second half of 2008.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my feelings of sincere friendship to the French people and to wish you success in your work for the benefit of France.”
