The Russian and Cuban national anthems were played during the ceremony on Havana’s Revolution Square.
Previously, the Russian President had laid a wreath at a memorial to Soviet soldiers and internationalists, unveiled just outside Havana on February 23, 1978 on the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Soviet Armed Forces. In all, 63 Soviet soldiers and internationalists killed in Cuba from 1962 to 1964 are buried on the grounds of the memorial.
