On the eve of Victory Day, the President laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by the Kremlin wall.
Taking part in the ceremony commemorating the 64th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War were Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office Sergei Naryshkin, First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov, Deputy Prime Ministers Dmitry Kozak and Sergei Ivanov, Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, Internal Affairs Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev, Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu, Speakers of the Federation Council and the State Duma Sergei Mironov and Boris Gryzlov, Prosecutor General Yury Chaika, Mayor of Moscow Yury Luzhkov, as well as representatives of civil society organisations and veterans of the Great Patriotic War.
Troops from the Moscow Garrison paraded by in solemn formation, ending the ceremony.
Mr Medvedev also laid flowers at the monuments to the hero cities.
