Mr Putin and Mr Chaika discussed perfecting the legislation on the fight against terrorism in accordance with the European Convention on the Suppression of Terrorism and the UN Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism. Russia joined the former convention last year and the latter this year.
In the course of the conversation, the President enquired about the execution of court rulings in the country, the state of the penitentiary system and the conditions in the penal institutions.
Mr Chaika told the President about the work of the Justice Ministry in Chechnya. He said in the year 2000 the bodies of the Justice Ministry in the republic had accepted 2,500 enquiries from permanent residents of Chechnya, while in the first eight months of the current year there had been nearly 5,000 enquiries.
