The talks took place in the Kempinski Heiligendamm Hotel’s library.

Mrs Merkel began by proposing that the two leaders concentrate on the subjects on the summit’s agenda and discuss in detail the issue of climate change. Mr Putin agreed with this proposal.

Before beginning their talks, Mr Putin and Mrs Merkel admired the view of the Baltic Sea from the terrace in front of the hotel.

After his meeting with Mrs Merkel, Mr Putin declared that Russia is ready to discuss in constructive fashion any of the issues raised at the Heiligendamm summit. The President noted that there are many issues on the table and said he was hopeful that the summit would be constructive and useful. We need to make use of every opportunity to work on and discuss the problems that have amassed, Mr Putin said, naming climate change, international issues and the situation in the Balkans as being among the issues currently high on the agenda.

The President said, following his 15-minute meeting with Mrs Merkel, that he and the German Chancellor discussed the upcoming summit’s agenda.
